Intro

What I am all about.

I grew up in Farsley, near Leeds. I attended St Mary's R.C. Comprehensive School and then left Leeds for Pembroke College, Cambridge where I read Natural Sciences. I settled in Cambridge and crossed the road to join the Department of Engineering where I briefly worked as a Research Assistant and then completed a PhD in carbon nanotubes and electron beams.

I continued at the department as a Research Associate and diversified into thin film deposition, devices and displays. Whilst there I also undertook undergraduate teaching of both Physics and Electrical Engineering, project-managed UK government and EU-sponsored collaborative projects, mentored a few PhD students, gave talks (many invited) at a variety of conferences around the world, did practical exams and took on a remote lectureship at Kyung Hee University in Korea.

I then had a change in direction. I joined the BBC's Research and Development Department in 2010. I have undertaken research in music information retrieval, audio broadcasting, mobile and second screen applications. I focussed on image processing, especially with regard to sport but I now work as a Technology Transfer Manager, getting the inventions and technical developments R&D produce out into the BBC and the wider broadcast industry.

In 2015 I took up a position as a Senior Technology Transfer Manager at Oxford University Innovation, the commercial arm of the University of Oxford. At OUI I am responsible for licensing and spinning out technology and ideas developed at the University. My portfolio of projects covers a wide range of technologies coming from the Departments of Chemistry, Engineering Science, Physics and Computer Science. I am also responsible for the Humanities & Social Sciences Divisions where we are substantially increasing our activity and developing ideas and projects.

I married Karen in 2008 and my daughter Tilly came along in 2012 followed by my son, Henry in 2014 and we currently live in Oxfordshire.
